Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning (HVAC)

Program Overview

The Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration (HVAC/R) Program at Northern Westmoreland Career & Technology Center (NWCTC) prepares students for careers in the installation, maintenance, and repair of residential and light commercial systems. Combining hands-on training with technical instruction, students gain the knowledge and skills needed to work confidently with modern heating, cooling, and refrigeration equipment.

Students learn to install, service, and troubleshoot systems that control temperature, humidity, air quality, and refrigeration. Training includes ductwork fabrication, system design and sizing, soldering and brazing, and electrical circuitry. Working in a fully equipped lab, students gain experience with a variety of systems including furnaces, boilers, heat pumps, and refrigeration units, while developing strong problem-solving and diagnostic abilities.

Emphasis is placed on safety, precision, and professionalism, ensuring students understand and follow proper procedures when using tools and instruments. Graduates are prepared for entry-level positions such as installation, maintenance, or service technicians and may continue their education through apprenticeships or postsecondary programs. This training provides a solid foundation for success in one of today’s most in-demand technical fields.
