Cosmetology

Program Overview

The Cosmetology Program at Northern Westmoreland Career & Technology Center (NWCTC) prepares students in grades 9–12 for rewarding careers in the beauty and personal care industry.

This multi-year program combines classroom instruction and hands-on salon experience to develop technical skill, creativity, professionalism, and safety awareness. Students gain comprehensive training in hair, skin, and nail care in preparation for Pennsylvania State Board licensure.

Instruction covers haircutting, coloring, chemical treatments, skin care, makeup application, and nail technology, including manicures, pedicures, and nail design. Students train in a modern, salon-like setting using professional-grade tools and products under the guidance of licensed instructors. Emphasis is placed on sanitation, infection control, and state safety regulations to ensure all services meet industry standards.

The program includes approximately 1,250 clock hours, qualifying students to take the state cosmetology licensing exam. Graduates are prepared for a variety of careers, including licensed cosmetologist, hairstylist, colorist, nail technician, makeup artist, esthetician, or salon manager. The program also provides a foundation for entrepreneurship and advancement within the beauty industry.

Student Expectations

Students in the Cosmetology Program are expected to:

• Arrive on time and be prepared for all class and lab activities.
• Wear the required uniform and safety gear at all times.
• Follow all sanitation, safety, and infection control procedures.
• Use tools, equipment, and products responsibly and maintain a clean, organized workspace.
• Demonstrate professionalism, respect, and courteous communication with clients and peers.
• Complete all assignments, services, and projects with care and attention to detail.
• Take pride in personal appearance, workmanship, and customer service.
• Be open to feedback and committed to continuous skill improvement.
• Adhere to all classroom and salon policies for attendance, safety, and conduct.
